Learning With MARBL

MARBL staff collaborate with instructors to incorporate rare books, manuscripts and archives into the classroom. Students are able to connect with history and with the creative process in a deeper way as they read first-hand accounts of the Civil Rights movement, compare early drafts of literary works, or explore the world in the first published atlas. Students who work with MARBL materials create new scholarship. Their research has led to honors theses, dissertations, exhibitions, journal articles, plays, and contributions to Emory's collections of digital texts. Download the guide to Learning in MARBL for Student Researchers.

Instruction Sessions

Instruction sessions are tailored to the needs of particular classes. Some classes come for a one-hour introduction to the experience of working with primary sources. Other classes will devote the entire semester to working with the Library's rich holdings.

MARBL currently offers:

  • Introduction to collection highlights related to a course topic, led by MARBL staff
  • Introduction to finding aids, research guides, and online tools, led by MARBL staff
  • Hands-on workshops with pre-selected materials during class sessions
  • Space for instructors to lead class sessions focused on MARBL materials

Class Assignments

MARBL encourages faculty to create assignments using the Library's collections. MARBL has created an instruction guide to assist professors in designing assignments best suited to their individual topics and goals.  

Staff are also available to meet with instructors to answer questions about the MARBL's collections, class assignments, or previous student projects. If you would like to meet with staff regarding your class assignment, please Contact Us.

Please note: Currently, MARBL does not have a group study space; if students are working on a group assignment, they will need to conduct their MARBL research individually, so that we can accommodate all of our researchers. Download a guide to Teaching with MARBL for Faculty.

Scheduling Classes

For assignments with a MARBL research component, we ask that instructors complete the form below.This information allows MARBL staff to better assist students and to advise other researchers of particularly busy periods in the reading room.  Staff will review all materials prior to putting them on hold for a course. MARBL reserves the right to restrict the use of items if preservation issues, such as brittleness, could lead to damage to original materials.

In addition, if a class has 25 or more students MARBL requires that:

  • The instructor meet with MARBL staff prior to the assignment
  • The instructor work with MARBL staff to determine a schedule for student research appointments
  • Those appointments be distributed over at least two weeks
