Emory's newly renovated Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library reopens Aug. 24

Emory University’s Manuscript, Archives, and Rare Book Library (MARBL) reopens Monday, Aug. 24, 2015, at 9 a.m. in its newly renovated space on Level 10 of the Robert W. Woodruff Library.

In May 2014, MARBL began a transformation of Level 10 to create spaces that match the distinction of MARBL’s collections and to foster engagement with primary evidence. The renovated space features an expanded reading room, dramatic vistas of Emory University and the Atlanta city skyline, interactive exhibit spaces, technologically-advanced classrooms, and beautiful gathering spaces. These enhancements will allow scholars, students, and the Atlanta community to rediscover MARBL in new and exciting ways.

“The project to expand and upgrade MARBL’s space and services is the culmination of many people’s efforts and dreams over the years,” MARBL Director Rosemary Magee says. “We’re thrilled with the opportunity to further strengthen one of Emory’s most distinguished and distinctive resources and to continue to convene important literary, historical, and scholarly conversations.”

The space was enlarged by enclosing a portion of the Woodruff balcony, which was redesigned to provide panoramic views of the Atlanta skyline from inside MARBL via floor-to-ceiling windows. Visitors will be able to step outside to one of two separate terraces for iconic views of the Emory community.

During the renovation, MARBL continued to provide its reading room and instruction services in interim spaces on Levels 7 and 8 in the Woodruff Library’s stack tower.

“The new MARBL space will operate as a dynamic and interactive place for students to explore and experience primary source materials firsthand, encouraging discovery, free thinking and fresh insights,” University Librarian Yolanda Cooper says. “Students, faculty, curators and the Atlanta community will be able to intersect and engage in spaces designed not only for research and teaching but also for social interaction and discourse.”
